Joe Whitehead founded GC Counsel because contractors deserve legal counsel that understands construction — not just the law.
Joe Whitehead is a construction attorney who has spent his career operating at the intersection of law and large-scale project delivery. Before founding GC Counsel, Joe served as in-house counsel on complex infrastructure and commercial construction projects — the kind of work where every contract clause has a real dollar consequence, and where the difference between a good outcome and a bad one often comes down to whether somebody read the fine print before signing.
That experience shapes how GC Counsel works. We do not advise from a distance. We sit with our clients the way an in-house GC would — understanding the project, the relationships, the margins, and the schedule — and we give practical, defensible guidance that the people running the job can actually use.
Most construction companies have two speeds for legal help: ignore it, or call a litigation firm after the damage is done. Neither works particularly well. General contractors routinely sign contracts they have not read carefully, miss lien deadlines because no one was tracking them, and eat change order losses that were legally recoverable if someone had sent the right notice at the right time.
GC Counsel fills that gap. A fractional arrangement means you have a real attorney — not a paralegal, not a template — reviewing your contracts, flagging your risks, and advising you through disputes before they become lawsuits. For what most firms would bill in a single litigation matter, you can have ongoing legal coverage for an entire year.
Directly and without a lot of overhead. You talk to Joe. He knows your matters. He remembers what was in your last contract and what you negotiated. When something comes up, you get a clear answer, not a research memo padded to justify a billing rate.
That is not a pitch. It is a description of how a small, focused practice actually operates — and why it is often the better choice for a contractor who needs consistent, reliable legal support and does not want to pay for a firm's associate training program.
Work with JoeWe do not handle divorces or DUIs. Construction law is what we do — contracts, lien rights, payment disputes, claims, and the full lifecycle of a project. That focus means you are not educating your attorney on what a schedule of values is.
We tell you what we actually think. If a position is weak, you hear it from us first, not from a judge. If a fight is not worth having, we say so. Legal advice is only useful if it is honest.
Construction moves fast. So do we. A contract question does not wait for a callback three days later. If you have a deadline or a dispute that needs attention today, we treat it that way.
